Planet Blue Sustainable Computing is where technology and a healthy planet meet. It is a cross-campus initiative at the University of Michigan. Faculty, staff and students from across campus have come together to create a culture of sustainability when using technology.
This initiative began in 2007 as Climate Savers Computing Initiative @ the University of Michigan. As a founding member of the national Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI), our group strived to promote green computing practices and specifically the development, deployment and adoption of smart technologies. These practices can both improve the efficiency of a computer's power delivery and reduce the energy consumed.
The mission of Planet Blue Sustainable Computing is to improve computing efficiency and to implement power management tools. Planet Blue Sustainable Computing also addresses IT environmental issues such as individual computing practices and data/server impacts, with the goal of influencing other universities and the IT industry. Our aim is to make green computing practices the norm on campus so the benefits to the university and the planet become a natural aspect of technology use at the University of Michigan.
We work closely with sustainability initiatives on campus. You can find us at Planet Blue Operations Open House events and other campus events such as EarthFest: Party for the Planet! and e-waste recycling events.
Collaboration is key to the success of Planet Blue Sustainable Computing. It's essential to leverage the resources available and to make sustainable computing part of the fabric of the university. Volunteers from over 25 units have contributed to the initiative, including:
