Transition from Climate Savers to
Planet Blue Sustainable Computing

Published: 08.26.2011

In 2007, U-M joined the Climate Savers Computing initiative (CSCI @ U-M), a project set out to promote green computing practices and the adoption of smart computing technologies among students, faculty and staff. The initiative not only informed campus community members, it also sparked university-wide change, inspiring individuals and departments to use computers more efficiently, print wiser and recycle better. CSCI @ U-M awarded 41 schools and buildings that participated in this change with achievement awards. Program accomplishments included the Power Down for the Planet Challenge, e-Waste Recycling event at Pioneer high school, and Computer Power and Patch Management implementation.

Now that the program commitment with Climate Savers is complete, the green computing project at U-M is continuing its efforts under the name Planet Blue Sustainable Computing. Offering tips, providing advice and clearing up myths, Sustainable Computing will offer resources to campus community members they can implement both at work and home. The Sustainable Computing website will be a resource the university cannot afford to be without.
